"Why is my betta getting pale?" A betta that loses colour can be completely normal, or it can be the first sign that something is wrong. This guide shows the normal reasons, the warning signs, and what you can do to help the colour come back.

Normal

Colour changes that are normal

A new home

Moving and shipping are stressful. Many bettas look paler for a while after they arrive, then colour up again as they settle.

Koi and marble bettas

They carry a "jumping" colour gene. Their pattern can change many times in their life. It's not a sickness.

Getting older

Older bettas slowly lose some brightness, and near the end of life they can look pale or grey.

Mood

A happy male in breeding mood looks brighter. When he's calm or resting, he can look a bit duller.

Koi bettas changeno two months look the same

This koi betta is from our shop. Koi and marble bettas can gain or lose colour patches as they grow, so a "new look" is part of the fun.

How fast? Nobody can predict it. Some change a little over months, others look different in just a few weeks. It can keep happening their whole life.

Warning signs

When pale means "check now"

Colour loss is a warning sign when it comes with any of these:

Fins clamped, not eating

Pale and tired at the bottom. Change the water and message us.

Dark stripes along the body

Horizontal "stress stripes" mean something in the tank is bothering him.

White spots or patches

Spots like grains of salt, or white fuzzy patches, are signs of sickness.

Torn or "melting" fins

Fin rot often comes with colour loss.

Momo says

Pale AND sad? That's not a mood. I change the water first, then I look for spots and torn fins.

Bring it back

How to help the colour come back

  1. Clean, treated water on a schedule. Dirty water is the most common reason for a dull betta. Always use anti-chlorine.
  2. A steady, calm spot. Room temperature, 25–30 °C, away from aircon, electric fans, windows and direct sun.
  3. Good food, not more food. 2–3 pellets, 1–2 times a day. Brine shrimp as a treat once or twice a week, not every day.
  4. Light by day, dark at night. A small tank light in the day and lights off at night gives him a normal rhythm.
  5. Give it time. After a move, give him about a week. In one study, bettas got their red back about 8 days after a 2-day trip. After a water fix, colour also comes back slowly.

Brine shrimp make my red pop. Once or twice a week is plenty, too much food makes me sick.

FAQ

Questions customers ask us

Why is my new betta pale?

Moving is stressful. Give him clean water, a calm spot and about a week to settle. Most new bettas colour up again.

My koi betta changed colour. Is he sick?

Usually not. Koi and marble bettas carry a gene that changes their pattern. Watch for the warning signs above, and if there are none, enjoy the new look.

Why is my betta turning white?

It can be a marble gene, old age, or sickness. White fuzzy patches, spots or torn fins mean sickness. Change the water and message us.

What are stress stripes?

Dark lines running along the body. They mean something is bothering him: dirty water, a new tank, or a spot that's too busy or too hot.

Does food really change colour?

Good food keeps him healthy, and healthy bettas show their best colour. Brine shrimp add natural pigments that help reds.
