Why does my hamster bite? How to tame a hamster, step by step

"Bakit ako kinakagat ng hamster ko?" A bite from a new hamster can feel personal, but it almost never is. Most bites come from fear, a sleepy hamster, or fingers that smell like food. This guide explains why hamsters bite or run away, which type is easiest to hold, and how to build trust step by step.

MomoLearning to be patient

DangoWinter White. Loves being held.

KinakoGolden Syrian. Needs time.

GomaWhite Robo. Too fast to catch.

Why hamsters bite or run away
A hand coming from above looks like a bird catching it.
Hamsters sleep in the day. A sleepy hamster grabbed from its nest may nip.
Wash your hands before you hold them.
A new hamster needs a few days to settle before handling.
Some hamsters are easier to hold
From what we see every day at our shop:
Winter White (like Dango)Best for beginners. A hamster you can hold every day.
Syrian (like Kinako)Takes patience. Tame slowly and it gets there.
Robo (like Goma)For watching. Very fast and hard to hold.

I'm the smallest and the fastest. Watch me play, don't chase me!

How to tame a hamster, step by step
- Days 1–3: hands off. No touching and no picking up. Moving is stressful, so let your hamster explore its new home and build its nest. Sit nearby and talk softly so it learns your voice.
- Wait until it's comfortable. It eats, drinks, runs on its wheel and comes out in the evening. Some hamsters need a few more days than others.
- Treat bribing. Offer a seed or a BSF treat from your fingers. Do this every evening until it takes treats without running away.
- Treat on an open palm. Put the treat in the middle of your flat hand, so it has to step on to get it.
- Scoop from below. Once it climbs on calmly, cup both hands under it, low over the bed or the floor. Never grab from above.
- Short and often. 10–15 minutes a day, in the evening when it's awake. If it runs off, try again tomorrow.

Hold me close to the floor. If I wiggle out, I don't fall far.
Can I keep two hamsters in one cage?
- Syrians: always alone. Adult Syrians fight.
- Dwarfs: same-sex can "somewhat" share. Watch for fighting and separate them if it starts.
- At our shop, dwarf pups share until about 6 weeks, then males and females are separated.
Questions customers ask us
Why did my hamster suddenly start biting?
Usually fear, being woken up, or fingers that smell like food. Go back a step in taming and go slower.
My hamster bit me and drew blood. Is that dangerous?
Wash it with soap and water and cover it. If it gets red, swollen or painful, see a doctor.
Why does my hamster run away from me?
It's still scared or still settling in. Give it the first 3 days to settle, then let it come to you for a treat on an open hand.
Which hamster is easiest to hold?
Winter White. It's the one we recommend for beginners who want to hold their hamster every day.
Do hamsters like to be held?
Some more than others. Winter Whites usually get used to it fastest. Syrians need patience. Robos are better for watching.
The cartoons show our characters Momo, Dango, Kinako and Goma. Goma is a white Robo; the usual Robo colour is sandy. The hamster photos are real hamsters.
