Hamsters in Philippine heat: how to keep them cool

Philippine summers are hard on hamsters. Their fur is made for cooler places, and a hot room can make them sick fast. This guide shows where to put the cage, the signs of a hamster that's too hot, and simple ways to keep it cool. It also covers the opposite problem: a cold aircon room.

MomoMelting in the summer heat

DangoWinter White. Fluffy coat, hot days.

KinakoGolden Syrian. Loves a cool spot.

Hamsters handle cool rooms much better than hot ones. In our Philippine summer, heat stroke is the bigger danger, so an aircon room is fine for them. Hamster care guides put the comfortable range at about 20–25 °C.
Location does most of the work

- Never in direct sun, not even for a few hours. Glass and plastic cages heat up fast.
- Indoors, in the coolest room, away from the kitchen and windows.
- Air can move, but don't point a fan straight at the cage.
- Off the floor of a hot room and away from walls that get afternoon sun.
Signs your hamster is too hot
Lying flat and stretched outMore than usual, and not moving much.
Fast breathing or pantingBreathing with an open mouth is a warning sign. Move it to a cooler room right away.
Wet fur around the mouth, droolingA serious sign. Cool the room and message us.
Weak, wobbly or tremblingSerious. Cool the room, offer water and message us right away.
Never wet your hamster or put it in cold water to cool it down. Move it to a cooler spot and let it cool slowly.
Simple ways to cool a hamster

- A frozen water bottle wrapped in a cloth in one corner, so the hamster can choose to lie near it.
- A ceramic or stone tile to lie on. You can chill it in the fridge for a few minutes first.
- A small piece of cucumber on hot days for extra water. Just a little, too much upsets the tummy.
- A sand bath. Hamsters clean themselves in sand, never in water.
- Fresh water every day. Check it twice on hot days. Don't add ice to the drinking water.

Give me a cool corner and a warm corner, and I'll pick where I want to be.
Cold aircon: "Is my hamster hibernating or dead?"

Cold is better than hot, so an aircon room is fine. Just set it up right:
- Not under the vent. Keep the cage out of the cold air stream.
- Lots of bedding so it can build a warm nest.
- Not too cold at night. Guides say below about 15 °C a hamster can go cold, limp and very still. This is called torpor, and it can look like hibernating.
Cold and not moving? Warm the room slowly, or hold it gently in your hands. Never put it on a heater or in hot water. Then message us.
